Meet the Pipistrelle Bats at Bodmin Jail This Easter!

Bodmin Jail isn’t just home to fascinating history, it’s also a secret hideout for one of Britain’s tiniest nocturnal creatures, the pipistrelle bat! These little winged wonders are expert fliers, darting through the night hunting midges, moths, and other insects. Weighing no more than a two pence coin, they tuck themselves away in tiny crevices, roof spaces, and, yes, you guessed it, the old stone walls of Bodmin Jail in Cornwall!

With its quiet, dark spaces, the jail makes a perfect roosting spot for these amazing bats. They sleep through the day and then head out at dusk to feed, using their built-in sonar (echolocation) to find their way. While bats often get a spooky reputation, they’re actually super important for the environment, helping keep insect numbers in check.
